Australia

Australia is committing heavily to green hydrogen, leveraging its abundant renewable energy potential, existing energy supplier status, and favorable investment environment. Through developing hydrogen technologies, economic viability, production capacity and supply chains, Australia plans to be a significant global player in the hydrogen industry by 2030.

This project identified 156 policy instruments that progress Australia’s hydrogen ambitions. With a focus on research and development, Australia emphasizes efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production, while promoting regional hubs, ports, and clusters to boost domestic industry, demand and innovation. Research and pilot projects are geared towards efficient domestic production, for usage mainly in mobility and heat, with some industrial applications.

A strong domestic industry, facilitated by hydrogen hubs, will propel export capabilities. Australia signals its intentions to export with hydrogen technology co-development and trade partnerships with Germany and Japan. The 2019 National Hydrogen Strategy sets out a goal to be among the top three exporters of hydrogen to the Asian market. The Strategy indicates that an internationally aligned certification scheme and high safety standards will be measures of success.

Building hydrogen capacity is part of Australia’s decarbonization plan. Australia aims for a 43 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions below 2005 levels by 2030 and eventual net-zero emissions by 2050. Investing in hydrogen technologies plays a vital role in achieving these targets and transitioning towards a renewable energy economy.
