United States
The United States is making significant investments in the development of hydrogen technology across various industries, driven by its commitment to achieving both industrial growth and climate change mitigation goals. At the forefront of hydrogen innovation, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) currently holds a portfolio of over 1,200 patents related to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
In 2021, the U.S. took a major step by signing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJ Act). This allocated a substantial USD 1.2 trillion to develop clean energy infrastructure. This investment has catalyzed hydrogen development throughout the supply chain.
Subsequently, the "U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap" was published in June 2023, outlining ambitious targets for advancing hydrogen technology. These include scaling up clean hydrogen production to 10 million metric tons (MMT) by 2030, 20 MMT by 2040, and 50 MMT by 2050. The roadmap also aims to achieve a 10% reduction in economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions and generate 100,000 new direct and indirect jobs by 2030.
This strategic roadmap aligns with broader national goals, including a 50% to 52% reduction in U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 levels by 2030, achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, delivering 100% carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035, and ensuring that 40% of the benefits from federal climate investments reach disadvantaged communities.
Central to the U.S. strategy is a concerted effort to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen production. This leads it to focus on both green and blue hydrogen. The country is expanding hydrogen production from fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage.
Our research into the U.S. hydrogen policy landscape reveals over 240 hydrogen-related policy interventions, with a detailed distribution outlined in the country dashboard. Analysis of the currently implemented interventions highlights the U.S.'s emphasis on expanding hydrogen hub infrastructure and creating a comprehensive policy environment to promote hydrogen usage, particularly as an alternative fuel for vehicle transportation. Hydrogen also features prominently in the U.S.'s international partnerships, including collaborations with Germany, Japan, India, and other nations.
